Mini Wildgoose

Wild is definitely the right description for this, anyone who decides to take a Mini van and turn it into a camper must be thinking outside of the box. The conversion kits were sold by a Sussex company during the 1960’s with a price tag of between £445-601 depending on size of kit etc. It was possible to buy a completed car ready to go!!!!!! It came with a 4 seater dinette in the back which would convert in to a 6” bed. I’ve attached the brochure for it and as you will see it looks surprisingly spacious. But with all that extra weight and only a 850cc engine as standard the suggested cruising speed of 70mph, seems quite optimistic.

Merkur Scorpio


To the Europeon views this car is nothing unusual, albeit with a different badge on the front. Over here it was sold in the late 80’s and early 90’s as the Ford Scorpio, Ford’s luxury executive car sat above the new Mondeo/ old Sierra in the range. But over in the states it was used to try and create a new luxury brand by Ford, importing the previously mentioned Scorpio but also the sport version of the Sierra. Selling European cars to the states had its hurdles, the main one being the requirements for safety.

Dazzling


I was out running the other night after being constantly blinded by car headlights I though back to a time when you could tell the make and model of a car in the dark by its lights. I remember sitting in the back of my Dad’s E21 BWW and firstly being able to look out of the windows and the waistband of the car was low enough but also spotting cars, Ford Escorts MK3/4’s with their square lights, Jaguars with the duel lights, VW Golfs with the single round lights etc. They were bright enough to supplement the streetlights while still allowing the style of lamp to be seen. If for some reason a run down a country lane was needed then on went the full beams and the hedges were lit up like day light.

Bugatti EB110


At the birth of the hypercar in the early 90’s, Bugatti seemed to have gone abit mad with its contender. Why have 2 wheel drive when 4 wheel will do, why have 1 turbo when 2 will do, hell why stop there we’ll put 4 in the mix!!!!!!! Active downforce form a rear spoiler, scissor doors oh and all built around a V12 please. It sounds like a sure fire hit when you take into account the numbers, 212mph, 0-60mph in 4.4s and 650bhp. To top it off it was built in Modena the home of the supercar with Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati being based there.

Jules Proto 6x4


Competing in the Paris Dakar is never an easy feat due to the rigours the vehicles have to go through to just finish. Most are either heavily adapted road cars/4x4 for privateers or for the established manufactured out to prove something with one off purpose built creations with the company face and model name attached to it. However, every so often a team enters with something truly awe-inspiring. The entry of the perfume sponsored “Jules” Proto in 1984 with 6 wheels, 4 powered (the rear axle not being powered), and powered by a mid mounted Chevy 350 V8 with 350bhp transmitted through a Porsche gearbox, all sat in a space frame chassis. The thing looks awesome and like it could take on anything. Unfortunately it didn’t finish due its chassis snapping!!!!!! Still this shows the innovative thinking that this race needs, it also looks cool.

Citroen M35

Despite producing 267 of these unusual coupe’s between 1969-71, Citroen never officially sold it. Instead they were unofficially sold to loyal customers as a sort of rolling long term concept car to get feedback on its usability, and new features including the flavour of the month Wangel engine and pneumatic suspension. The cars themselves were built by Heuliez. After the testing was finished Citroen bought back nearly 2/3rds of the cars, the rest still reside in the public domain.

8th Annual Classic Car and Bike Winter Restoration Show, Donington Park

Well 2 days into the new year and definitely time for an auto jumble / car show. This time I headed over to Donington Park for, thankfully, an in door event. After getting there early and queuing to get in, I paid my money and entered the large venue. The choice of vendors was quiet large, definitely a place to put on your calendar if you planning a project over winter and need parts.
