Ultimate Dubs 2015

An early start to a Sunday saw me heading down to the Telford Convention Centre for what’s deemed the opener for the Volkswagen show season, where the cars built over the winter months first see the light of day. Now this isn’t a show I’d been to before so I didn’t really know what to expect when I arrived at the already full car park at 8am!!!!

Schuppan 962 CR

Key headlines on this one are, former race car driver takes inspiration and a lot more from his La Mans winning Porsche 962 and builds a better faster road legal version then sells it at a production hypercar.

Alltypes, Bodelwyddan Castle

With guaranteed good weather clubs and show cars descended on Bodelwyddan Castle for one of the best VW shows in the north, if not the UK. I was there representing the Scirocco Register with my trusty Mk2 so an early start was needed for a full day at the show.

Random Picture: 6 wheeled Porsche 935

I would love some more information on this 6 wheeled car, all I’ve been able to find out from a small magazine article is it wasn’t running a 6 cylinder engine. The report stated that it sounded like more cylinders, possibly 12, and had a turbo whistle while on test at Weissach. It also speculated, as at the time many manufacturers were dabbling, that it was a 6 wheeled F1 development car. If you know any more then please get it touch.

Dacon 828

Thanks to Jalopnik posting this up in their recent “Theses are 10 unbelievable cars you never knew existed” article, along with a few others that will end upon here, its appeared on a few Facebook pages, but it was the same picture the one of the rear I wanted to see and know more.

Porsche 916

Could this be the car that all Porsche enthusiast really wanted the 914 to be, after all the 914, to some anyway, was not really a Porsche as its heart was a Volkswagen flat four. This was despite it also being offered with a Porsche derived flat six. It was always on the edge of both marques not really fitting in to either. Personally I love it, its 70’s styling, mid engined layout and removable top meant it was a true sports car of the age. Porsche though realised the buying public wanted a little more, the result was the 916 program.

Record breaking attempt Porsche 935

Well record breaking is only slightly true, the car really helped break a record. But what a car to help you hey!!! We’ll get back to that huge wing arrangement on the back in a minute or so, let’s start with the car, Porsche modified one of its 800bhp racing monsters for the record attend. They were not the only German manufacturer to lend a helping hand. Volkswagen loaned them their Ehra-Lessien test track, you know the one James May topped out the Bugatti on, as it had a 9km long straight. So what record could possible need an 800bhp racing porker wearing one hell of a rear wing and really long straight? Cycling

Manchester Classic Car, Eventcity

Although there had been indoor classic car shows staged at Eventcity in Manchester, Passion and Power was earlier this year, this was the first outing for the “Manchester Classic Car Show”. Looking at the adverts for it in the local press and on the web it looked like it was going to be a good inaugural event. Ran over the weekend I dropped in on the Saturday morning and I knew I was in for a treat when in a fenced off area six or so classic rally cars came driving past the entrance, including a shot wheel based Audi Quattro!!!!

VWNW 2013

It’s the first weekend in August which in the northwest of England means its Volkswagen Northwest and the early start to a Sunday morning. I was there for the day as I had arranged the Scirocco Register’s club stand so had plenty of time to take it all in. Well if the rain that was forecast held off.

Like previous years (2012, 2011, etc) there were club areas, concours area, auto jumble, for sale area and general sales for anything from tools and parts to plants and cupcakes.

Awesome and Detailed Summer Bash

With this event being so close, as well as me getting some work done there in the past on my Scirocco, I had virtually no excuse for not popping over to this at Awesome's work shop. In fact for those don't know Awesome specialise in modifying and customising anything from the VAG family album, and this was its annual open day.

Porsche Tapiro

This has to be one of those “what if” cars. A concept so radical to a brand that it could have been a new start and direction. By this time the 911 was nearly 20 years old and Porsche were looking for its replacement. As history has dictated every 911 replacement never stopped its evolution and stubbornness. But just think if this had have been the future.

Having the underpinnings of the mid-engined Porsche 914/6 along with its 220bhp, 2.4ltr flat 6 air cooled engine, designer by Italdesign's Giugiaro draped it in a wedge shaped gull winged doored body.

Golf 928

These days if you’re like me and watch the current crop of custom car shows, then the fitting a body from one car onto the running gear of something more exotic is nothing new, particularly with 60’s muscle cars on to their modern interpretations underpinnings.

Back in the early 80’s however this was unusual, so when German firm Nordstadt took the humble MK1 Golf and grafted in on too, what was at the time a supercar chassis, Porsche 928. The result was a V8 powered Golf that had a lower drag coefficient and more room inside than the donor car. But there was more to it than that. In order for the body to accommodate the Porsche running gear the body had to be widened by just over 8 inches.

Porsche 912

In my naivety I thought that once the 911 was the car of choice for the Porsche machine its humble VW beginings were a distant memory, but recently my eyes have been opened to the 912. Produced along side the 911 between 1965 and 1969 it even outsold the legendary 911 in late 60's. Why you might ask, well the large flat 6 hung out of the back had given the 911 and bad reputation in the handling stakes. The 912 though had a much lighter flat 4, giving it a engine sound that harks back to its Beetle predecesor. Although the engine simirlarities end there, engine came out of the 356. With less pendulum action around the twisty stuff it was the drivers car of choice at the time, well atleast the car your almost guarenteed wont meet a tree down a country lane backwards anyway. To top it all off it was cheaper, sold as the entry level Porsche as the time.

But as history is written by the victors and VW spent the last 50 years sorting out the tail action of the 911 the low power 912 was lost with the improvements and an increasing pedigree of both the Porsche brand and the 911 flagship.

Today the 912 with modern tinkering to its engine now can produce the same power as its 911 stablemate of the same period but still with that better handling, all this and its much cheaper than the 911. And to be honest apart from the badge on the back could you tell the difference????

Porsche 989 Prototype

So when do you think this Porsche concept was built 2004, 2000? No this was actually built, but never officially shown, in 1988!!!! That’s 22 years ago!!!! Sports cars manufacturers are only just coming round to producing 4 door alternatives in the likes of the Porsche Panamera, Aston Martin Rapide and Lamborghini’s Estoque. To think that a working “prototype” of the Panamera was produced in another automotive time is a revelation. The 989 is based around the 928 front engined car produced at the time with an elongated 911 body just like the current Panamera. Unfortunately due to sale of its front engined cars slowing and the early 90’s recession Porsche shelved the car in 1992. To say Porsche were well ahead of the game is an understatement if that had been released just think what cars we would have today and that new supercar saloon niche. All we need to find now lurking around in the Porsche R&D; bunker parked next to this would be a 4x4 with an inflated 911 body also produced in the 1980’s.
