Talbot Matra Murena

The title of a picture over on Retrobeutes got my attention “rare, 3 seat French car”, hmmm all the boxes ticked there then. The picture had been taken at the Capesthorne Hall Classic Car Show, not far from my home those two things were enough for me to head over there the following day. Although that car was not there another white one was, but it did get me thinking exactly how rare are these!!!!

I had this on the radar for the last week but hadn't planned on going until Sunday evening when I saw some pictures of that days show over on Retrobeutes. With rare cars a distinct possibility, weather looking good for at least the morning (not bad for a Bank Holiday Monday in the UK) and my little one suitably bribed with the promise of ice cream and sweets we loaded the Scirocco and made the hours’ drive over to the stunning Capesthorne Hall first thing in the morning. This was not only a place I’ve never been too but also a show I'd never been too so I was looking forward to it.

Let’s say you were a business man who travels around the world and needed to get from the airport to you meeting quickly, this is the problem that some Mazda engineers thought about during a design competition for its Engineering Department in 1991. Their solution? a suitcase that could transform into a car within seconds, well 10-15seconds to be precise.

AllTypes VW Show, Bodelwyddan Castle

This is a show that well and truly on my calendar (2012, 2011 etc), in the last few years I've not only attended but had my Scirocco on the Scirocco Registers club stand, which meant I got to see the whole show from start to finish. So after an early start (6am) I drove the 70 miles from Manchester to Abergely to meet up with my fellow Scrirocco's before heading back to Bodelwyddan Castle for the day. And what a day definitely one of two halves. The start was one of low cloud and the constant threat of rain while the afternoon was clear blue skies and sunburn!!!!

I first saw a picture of this car on Dep-O’s facebook page a few weeks ago and just needed to know more. Well it was up for sale a few years back and was described as a one off build. And what a one off build, the base car was a 1980 Chevy Citation, but this wasn’t a simple cut the front down and remove a wheel affair.

VW IRVW Futura

Debuted in 1989 as the car we'd be driving in the year 2000 by Volkswagen, it wasn’t that far off. Well about 10 years, bear with me. This was effectively a people carrier; it had an LCD screen to give the driver information, a 1.7ltr petrol engine that was a frugal as the conventional diesel due to its direct injection, catalytic convertor, 4 wheel steering, lane and hazard proximity sensors!!!!

They had already expanded into off roaders with the LM002 and into speed boats with their V12 being offered to turn the propellers!!! However they weren’t finished there. The Nurburgring Part 3: Taxi, second lap and home

 

An early start was needed on the Sunday, it was a open session on the track and due to it being my Birthday I had been bought a truly memorable experience by a few of my friends who were with me and my otherhalf who was not, a seat in one the BMW M5 Ring Taxi's. So after a nosey around the filling car park we met our driver and climbed into this 570bhp rear wheel drive monster.

The Nurburgring Part 2: Taking it all in

Saturday was a closed session on the track for the RCN Circuit Challenge and not wanting to miss the action we headed back to the viewing area at Brunnchen which unlike on Friday was much busier for this touring car series. We set up for some track side action with loads of locals, some of which had arrived for the day  looking at the BBQ's and beer!! We were not disappointed as a whole mix of cars drove by, from your basic Ring fare of BMW 3 series and 911's both new and old, too VW Golf's both MK1, 2's and 3's, VW Polo's, Vauxhall Nova's, Citroen AX's, Porsche 924/944/928's, Honda Civic, MGB GT's and even a Renault Alpine.

Datsun Sport 1000 (S211)

When you think of Datsun the terms “classic” and “rare” aren’t the first words to spring to mind. Well this car is certainly both. One of the Datsun's first true sports cars it was built in 1958 and was based on the 211 Sedan. Its 1ltr engine producing 37bhp may not have set the tarmac on light but its rarity more that makes up for it.
