With only 32 car built it’s surprising that it came with a variety of body styles from various coachbuilders, namely Touring who built the first two, then Carrozzeria Allemano who built a further 22. The rest of mainly one-off builds also included Pietro Frua and Pinnafarina.

Now let’s just start with saying what we’re all thinking “absolutely stunning”, right that’s out of the way let’s get down to business. Despite being in production for seven years between 1963 and 70 only 125 Spyder versions actually left the factory.

Now this it a footnote in Maserati sports car production, not only was it the first Bertone styled Maserati but more importantly it’s the only true wedge the company ever produced. It may have been a Kneejerk reaction to the ground breaking Lamborghini Countach, styled by Marcello Gandini of Bertone, only a few years before who also penned this.

I spotted this one at the recent Passion for Power show at Tatton Park, in amongst the individual showers. Seeing an early 90’s Maserati is rare at the best of times but after talking to the owner, this one is really rare.

James Martin’s Supercar Sunday, Great Northern Square, Manchester

When I found out about this event in the centre of Manchester and that renowned celebrity chef and all round petrol head James Martin was hosting it, I knew the cars would be awesome and I wasn’t disappointed.

Maserati Shamal

Conceived when Maserati was under De Tomaso's stewardship when budgets were tight and finally brought to the public by Fiat after its buyout during its development, in 1989. In fact despite the modern body designed by Maserati's Design Centre in conjunction with Marcello Gandni (Lamborghini Countach), the chassis underneath though spanned back two models to the Spyder in 1984. Now lets get back to that body, you can't miss those widened box arches that hint that this sports car has rally connections. But like so many cars of the era they were just for show, just like that "of the time" bonnet spoiler which I must admit I really like.
