SeaRoader Lamborghini Countach

I remember seeing this on TV back in the day and just being amazed by it. I mean who looks at a Countach and thinks “I wonder if I can make that amphibious?” well the long established Searoader Company did just that. Oh and you may not know the name but I guarantee you’ve seen their work on Top Gear.

Isuzu Nagisa

Now here’s a reall oddity from 1991 the Isuzu Nagisa amphibious concept car. There’s not much information out there, just a few pictures. From what I’ve found it was powered by a 3.2ltr V6, but beyond that nothing other than a few pictures, one being the concept.

Trabant 8 wheeler!!!!

This popped up on Dep-O’s facebook page this week and as soon as I saw it I knew it was destined for here. There’s only a few sketchy bits of information dotted around a few website so heres the crux of what I could find.

Built in collaboration between East Germany and the Soviet Union and based around the humble Trabant mated to a RDA platform. Two were built before the project was abandoned.

Herzog Conte Scwimmwagen

I first saw one of these over on the Dep-o Facebook page and just had to find out more. Debuted in Frankfurt Saloon in 1979 I would have imagined to gasps from the audience was this amphibious car. I’ve not been able to find out much about it apart from it has Ford Taunus running gear and 2.3ltr V6 engine fitted producing 135bhp. It seems to be a go at producing a luxury boat/car, as it came with all the creature comforts of the time, including power steering and that removable hard top!!!!

Marmon-Herrington “The Rhino”

In 1954 this strange vehicle rolled out of a factory unit after 5 years of development in Indiana, the brainchild of Elie Agnides. Designed to be a go anywhere vehicle, it was at home on the road, mud and even water, yes it’s amphibious. To top it all off its also got switchable 2 and 4 wheel drive and will cruise at up to 45mph thanks to its 110bhp diesel engine. On the water thrust was provided by a rear pump system with a nozzle that can be rotates 360 degrees. Check out the link below to the Popular Science magazine write up on this beast.

Like many who saw this viral video last week I was just blown away with it and needed to know more, was it a one off? Was it for a film? etc questions were running through my mind, so after some time on Google to my surprise it turns out that this is a production vehicle!!!!

The Iguana 29

Okay I suppose this is more boat than land vehicle but bear with me because it does have one unusual trick up its sleeve or rather in its hull, tank tracks!!!! The concept was simple if a little restrictive for sales, “between the bay of Mont St Michel and the south of Jersey, where the tide can go out for miles and where one has to navigate between sandbanks, rocks and currents. The concept (which is subject to a word-wide patent) is based upon the integration of tracks within the hull without affecting its aesthetics, performance, or its seaworthiness”. The result is this amphibious vehicle that can easily take on this kind of landscape, and it does look the part.

Amphicoach GTS-1

Well I though it was about time for something completely different, I was always going to do a coach but when I saw this it seemed to be built for this website, an amphibious coach!!!!! What’s different about this one it is looks like a conventional coach, not an elongated military vehicle that’s as luxurious as a tug boat on wheels. As you can see it looks like any other one you pass on the motorway, with all the luxury we have come to expect. It can spend hours in open water and comes with all the requirements for full road use such as ABS, life vests and seatbelts again complying with both requirements for road and sea. Powered by 250 and 300bhp diesel engines and its rear wheels retract in the water reducing drag. Amazingly enough has been achieved with full compliance to all relevant E.U. Legislation for Passenger Vehicles and Passenger Vessels. This legislation is widely known to be the most extensive in the world, and is achieved without any need for exemptions for the vehicles dual purpose capability.

This is truly one of those vehicles that takes an existing concept and goes well beyond it, its like comparing a Bugatti Veyron with the SCC Ultimate Aero TT ie ones a fibreglass bucket with an engine and a seat, the other is pure luxury and does the same insane job!!!!
