Car Show: Alltypes, Bodelwyddan Castle

An overcast Sunday in north Wales walking round a Volkswagen show what could be better and the Alltypes show has something for everyone from Aircooled to retro and 90’s to modern. Throw into the mix rat-look, air-ride and lots of vans what more could you want.

Ultimate Dubs 2015

An early start to a Sunday saw me heading down to the Telford Convention Centre for what’s deemed the opener for the Volkswagen show season, where the cars built over the winter months first see the light of day. Now this isn’t a show I’d been to before so I didn’t really know what to expect when I arrived at the already full car park at 8am!!!!

Audi Jaray “Ugly Duckling”

I was at the Alltypes show at Bodelwyddan Castle last weekend, there early as I was on a club stand and I was watching an enclosed transporter pull up in front of the Club Audi stand, thinking “someone must have too much time on their hands” my jaw hit the floor when this rolled out of the back. The Audi 1923 Jaray “Ugly Duckling” recreation you know the one from the recent TV advert, it was on load from Audi UK and what a scoop to have on your club stand.

Alltypes, Bodelwyddan Castle

With guaranteed good weather clubs and show cars descended on Bodelwyddan Castle for one of the best VW shows in the north, if not the UK. I was there representing the Scirocco Register with my trusty Mk2 so an early start was needed for a full day at the show.

ARTZ Audi UR Quattro Kombi

ARTZ have somewhat of knack of building strange variants of production cars, we’ve already covered the Golf 928 on here, blending a humble Volkswagen with Porsche underpinnings. This though took the iconic rally/road car and turned it into a kombi / 3 door estate.

Audi 100 Coupe S

With Audi only being early on into its Volkswagen resurrection plans this was released a few years after the 4 door salon version in 1970. With shorter chassis it allowed for some more power from that upfront engine over the saloon and was offered with bored-out 1.9 litre producing 113bhp. The stylish fastback body allowed it to be sold as both a GT car and the sports car in the limited Audi line-up in the 70’s.

VWNW 2013

It’s the first weekend in August which in the northwest of England means its Volkswagen Northwest and the early start to a Sunday morning. I was there for the day as I had arranged the Scirocco Register’s club stand so had plenty of time to take it all in. Well if the rain that was forecast held off.

Like previous years (2012, 2011, etc) there were club areas, concours area, auto jumble, for sale area and general sales for anything from tools and parts to plants and cupcakes.

AllTypes VW Show, Bodelwyddan Castle

This is a show that well and truly on my calendar (2012, 2011 etc), in the last few years I've not only attended but had my Scirocco on the Scirocco Registers club stand, which meant I got to see the whole show from start to finish. So after an early start (6am) I drove the 70 miles from Manchester to Abergely to meet up with my fellow Scrirocco's before heading back to Bodelwyddan Castle for the day. And what a day definitely one of two halves. The start was one of low cloud and the constant threat of rain while the afternoon was clear blue skies and sunburn!!!!

Zender Fact 4

Anyone who was into modified cars in the 80's and 90's knows the Zender name and its mad, wide bodykits. I know of a Zender wide bodied mk2 Scirocco that is just awesome. However they did try to make the transition from modifying cars to building them, and where best to get into the industry at the end of the 80's than the Supercar segment.

Treser Audi Quattro Convertible

During the 1980’s Walter Treser was infamous for restyling and modifying all manner of Audi’s. One of the most extreme was the hardtop convertible conversion of the awesome Quattro. This though was not your conventional roof chop but utilised a lifting panel to the rear to reveal the small hardtop that rotates up from around the rear seats, well if you could all them that. It was even offered with a full wide kit, how very 80’s is all that. I’m not sure how many were built but its definitely different and and one of those you either love or hate, particularly with the roof up. I think it looks awesome both ways.

Alltypes, Bodelwyddan Castle, North Wales

Well once again I headed over to the Alltypes VW show, this time though I was participating with my own Mk2 VW Scirocco being on the Scirocco Register club stand. As with pervious visits (search for Alltypes or have a look at the galleries) there was the usual mix of both air and water cooled cars and vans. With everything from Bugs, Campers, Dune Buggies, Golf’s, Polo’s, Carrado’s, Passat’s, Audi’s and everything in between. From rat look to lowrider and
full on show cars.

Audi Karmann Asso di Picche

 In the late 1960’s Karmann was well aware that the much loved Beetle was coming to an end and with it the subsidury versions that Karmann produced such as the Ghia and Cabriolet. With this in mind and the reintroduction of the Audi brand and new cars set to wear the badge, it got Giorgio Giugiaro to undertake a design concept for a 4 seater sports coupe, to replace the foreseen outgoing VW based models. The result was this in 1973, the Audi Karmann Asso di Picche (Ace of Spades in French). Based on the current Audi 80’s chassis and engine it was a radical departure in the styling department taking the wedge shape design philosophy of the 70’s and running with it. Unfortunately it could be said that the MK1 Scirocco beat them to it as at the time VW had signed off its design. But fortunately it was Karmann that was given the car to build.
